October 13 - Santorini Greece

Santorini

We arrived at the Santorini harbor early in the morning and were tendered to shore around 8:00 am.

The island of Santorini is what remains after volcanic eruption thousands of years ago.  The caldera of the volcano is easily visible from the main towns of Santorini, Fira and Oia.

Our tour began with a tour of the archaeological site of Akrotiri, located at the south end of the island.  This town existed as early a the fifth century BC.  The evacuation of this site continues.  Only about 10% of the town has been explored.  The town includes substantial buildings, streets, dual pipe plumbing, and many antiquities.  Very few treasures or human skeletal remains have been found ... suggesting that the town was evacuated rather than have buried by a volcano.

After touring Akrotiri we went to Oia at the northern tip of the island.  Here we walked the street, had dinner at a restaurant overlooking the caldera.

After dinner we bused to Fira to take the cable car down to the dock to be tendered back to the ship.

The line to get on the cable car was long ... it took almost an hour to get to the dock.

We enjoyed our visit at Santorini ... beautiful views.

The sites we visited were crowded with other tourists.

We tendered back to the ship and began the voyage to Malta ... with one day at sea.
