The plan for today was to locate ancestor graves, to confirm, and hopefully, find records for Bonnie's ancestors in the Lapeer and St. Clair County Michigan.
We started off the day by going to Lapeer, Michigan.
Here we went to the County Clerk and to the Lapeer Library.
Many of the records in Michigan have been transferred to the state in Lansing. Records in the early 1800's are very difficult to find. We have found that the information in the libraries is often very helpful and, in some cases, more useful than we found in the county offices.
After leaving Lapeer we traveled to Almont. We did not find records there but did visit two cemeteries. The Hough Cemetery south of Almont included Bonnie's great-grandparents John Walter Howard (1868-1913) and Ellen M. Douglas (1869-1949). This section of the cemetery included several Howard ancestors and is being kept very well.
We traveled to the north side of Almont to the Webster Cemetery where Bonnie's great-grandparents John Henry Douglas (1849-1930) and Polly Ann Downer (1848-1892) are buried. Next to Polly Ann's grave marker is her father's grave, Edmund Downer (1819-????)
After leaving Almont we traveled to Port Huron the county seat of St. Clair County. We visited the library and County Clerk, but did not find any new records.
Port Huron is the place that we entered the US from Canada last Sunday. Port Huron is at the southern tip of Lake Huron and is separated from Canada by the St. Clair River. The river joins Lake Huron and Lake Erie.
After visiting the libray and county offices we crossed the street to view the river. From this point we could see the bridge joining Canada and the US. A large boat was passing by while we were there.
The weather today was clear skies and temperatures in the mid-60's. A beautiful day.
We arrived home after dinner at about 6:30 pm.
