The weather today was sunny and pleasant (65 degrees). Our drives north of the city today were through rural and some suburb areas. The scenery was beautiful.
We started the day by going to the Addison Township Offices and Library.
The people and resources there were helpful by helping us find more information about Leonard and the Lakeville Cemetery.
We then went to the Lakeville Cemetery just south of Leonard. The drive to the cemetery was partly down a country lane.
After entering the cemetery we met the sexton who was there to prepare for a funeral that day. He has been the sexton for 37 years (he used to dig the graves by hand). He was very helpful in locating the many ancestor graves for us.
Bonnie and the sexton are standing at the grave marker for Derrick Hulick (1759-1843) He was a private in the Continental Army during the Revolution. Derrick is the grandson of Derrick Gulick whose home we saw when we were in New Jersey. He is one of the first to be buried in the cemetery as shown on the monument below.
There are several other of Bonnie's ancestors buried in this cemetery.
Moses Snover (1777-1858) and Margaret Keen Snover (1779-1868). Moses and Margaret are Bonnie's 5th great-grandparents.
George Snover (1801-1881) and Charity Hulick Snover (1803-1875) are Bonnie's 5th great-grandparents.
Thomas Howard (1843-1915) and Pernina Snover Howard (1840-1918) are Bonnie's 3rd great-grandparents.
After our our visit at the cemetery we went to Leonard.
This is the town where many of these people lived and where Bonnie's grandmother and great-grandmother lived in the early 1900's.
We located the home where they lived in Leonard.
This is the home today (with additions over the years)
This is the home in 1908. Pictured in front of the home are Bonnie's grandmother, Lue Margaret Howard Heyneman (1903-1990) and her great-grandmother Ellen M Douglas Howard (1869-1949).
After leaving Leonard we drove to Dearborn, Michigan (south of Detriot) to visit The Henry Ford Museum. This museum is AMAZING. We were in the museum for about 2 1/2 hours and could have spent more time here. In addition to this museum there are several other things available to do in the area (Greenfield village, Ford auto plan tour, etc.). It would be easy to spend a day in the area. The museum includes exhibits about machines, furniture, automobiles, airplanes, inventions, steam engines, and on and on. Shown below are a few of the things we saw in the museum.
It was a great day for both family memories and fun.
